Hungary will postpone the ratification of Sweden's NATO membership

Hungary's parliament will not ratify Sweden's NATO membership before the summer break, as the issue is not on next week's agenda, Hungarian media reported.

Portals hvg.hu and index.hu reported that the Parliament, where Prime Minister Viktor Orban's Fidesz party is in the majority, will postpone the vote even further, citing worsening relations with Sweden.

The media office of the Hungarian Parliament has not confirmed these reports, but has said that the agenda for next week's session will be finalized on Thursday. Leftist opposition lawmaker Agnes Vadai wrote on Facebook that Orban will not put Sweden's accession to NATO to a vote in next week's session.

The Swedish Foreign Ministry did not respond to Reuters' request for comment on the matter.

Sweden and Finland abandoned their long-standing policy of military non-commitment following the launch of Russia's invasion of Ukraine last year. Both countries sought greater security by expressing a desire to join NATO. Finland became a member of the alliance in April, but the process for Sweden has been slower.

Sweden is seeking to join the alliance during the July 11-12 summit. While Stockholm has support from other member states, including the United States, Turkey and Hungary have so far not ratified Sweden's accession to NATO. With the ratification process deadlocked in the Hungarian Parliament since July last year, Orban in February for the first time expressed concerns about Sweden and Finland joining NATO.

He has accused both countries of "spreading lies" about democracy and the rule of law in Hungary, even though Hungarian lawmakers ratified Finland's admission to the alliance at the end of March./ Rel
