Protests continue in Paris/ Over 600 people arrested

More than 600 people have been arrested as clashes between police and protesters continue for the third day, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced.

In Paris, shops were looted and cars burned, despite a heavy police presence. 40,000 officers were deployed across France to manage the situation.

The protest began on Tuesday after police shot dead a 17-year-old boy of Algerian-Moroccan descent, named Nahel M, as he was leaving a traffic stop.

The policeman who shot Nahel has apologized to the family. He has been charged with murder and his lawyer says he is "devastated".

Nahel's mother earlier said she didn't blame the entire police force — just the officer who shot him dead.

"He saw the face of an Arab, of a small child, and he wanted to take his life," she said.

On Thursday afternoon, thousands of citizens took part in a peaceful tribute march led by Nahel's mother.

The teenager's death has revived complaints about police and racial profiling in suburban France./ CNA
