Launch of an alternative therapy/China enters the obesity drug market

Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly, the two giants that dominate the global obesity drug market, are facing competition from China for the first time.

Chinese company Innovent Biologics last week secured a license for the drug mazdutide, with Bloomberg calling it a turning point in China's efforts to combat rising obesity and diabetes rates with its own innovations.

More than 600 million Chinese adults are estimated to be overweight by 2050. With the launch of a domestic alternative to Novo and Lilly's GLP-1 therapies, weight loss drugs could become more affordable in the world's second-largest economy.

Analysts estimate that the Chinese market for weight loss drugs could reach a turnover of 5.6 to 11.4 billion dollars a year. Although it constitutes a small part of the global market of 150 billion dollars, the increased availability and reduction of prices of the drugs will be important developments, after the launch of domestic preparations . / CNA
