Cuba faces fuel shortage for planes

Cuba warned international airlines on Tuesday that there will be no more fuel for planes on the island starting Tuesday, another sign that the situation is rapidly deteriorating after the United States recently took action to stop its oil supplies. 

The absence will last from February 10 to March 11. However, senior officials claimed that air travel will not be affected.

Historically, Cuba has relied on Venezuela for jet fuel, but since mid-December, when the United States blocked exports from Caracas, it has not received any crude or refined products from its main ally.

US President Donald Trump has vowed that Cuba will no longer receive oil from Venezuela and has threatened to impose tariffs on countries that supply Havana.

A similar crisis last year, as well as others recently, forced many airlines to refuel in third countries, including Panama, the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic and the United States. /CNA
