WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is expected to plead guilty on Wednesday to violating US espionage laws in a deal with the US Justice Department that will free him from prison and allow him to return to his home in Australia. , ending a 14-year legal saga.

Assange, 52, agreed to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to obtain and publish classified US national defense documents, according to the US District Court filing in the Northern Mariana Islands.

On Wednesday, he is expected to be sentenced to 62 months in prison, which he has already served.

Prosecutors said the hearing will be held on the US Pacific island of Saipan as Assange has refused to travel to the US and the island is close to Australia.

Assange left Belmarsh prison in the UK on Monday night, WikiLeaks said in a post on the X social network.

"This is the result of a global campaign that involved press rights activists, lawmakers and leaders from across the political spectrum to the United Nations," WikiLeaks said.

"Julian is free!!!" wrote his wife, Stella Assange, on X.

"Words cannot express the extraordinary gratitude to you, yes you, who mobilized for years and years, to make this possible", she added.

"The Albanian Prime Minister has been clear: Assange's case has dragged on far too long and there is nothing to be gained by keeping him in prison," said a spokesperson for the Australian Government.

Assange's lawyer did not respond to Reuters' request for comment./ REL
