The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has appointed Tom Sullivan as a new advisor to the US State Department, replacing Derek Chollet, who has taken a new post at the Pentagon.

Sullivan has until now served as Blinken's deputy chief of staff and held that position even when John Kerry was secretary of state.

"Tom Sullivan has a deep knowledge of how our national security policy is formulated and implemented, a knowledge he uses every day on behalf of the American people," Blinken said in a June 24 press release.

According to the announcement, Tom Sullivan has participated in meetings with heads of state, foreign ministers and world leaders "as we rebuild our alliances and partnerships, oppose Russia's aggression against Ukraine and stabilize our relationship with China, but also protect American interests and work to lasting peace, security and stability in the Middle East".

Derek Chollet was a special advisor to DASH and has been engaged with issues related to the Western Balkans region, but those in Myanmar and Northern Ireland.

In July of last year, he announced that he would take a new position in the US Department of Defense./ Rel
