World War II bomb found, 18,000 residents evacuated in eastern German city

About 18,000 residents were forced to flee their homes in central Dresden after a World War II bomb was discovered on the banks of the Elbe River, the largest evacuation ever carried out in the eastern German city.

Explosives experts defused a 250kg British bomb that was discovered on Wednesday during work on a bridge that collapsed in 2024.

The operation began around 9 a.m. local time with the participation of more than 400 police officers, a helicopter and a drone.

The aim was to ensure that homes, shops, schools, nursing homes and offices within a radius of one kilometre were evacuated. Among the buildings affected were historic Dresden buildings such as the Zwinger Palace and the Frauenkirche Church.

As announced by the police, the neutralized bomb will be transported to a specialized center for destruction. In January and August 2025, bombs from the era of World War II were also found and deactivated in Dresden, which was mercilessly bombed on February 13-14, 1945. /CNA
