Nearly 100 dead from floods in Somalia

The death toll from floods following heavy rains in Somalia has risen to 96, state news agency SONNA reported on Saturday.

"The death toll from the floods in Somalia has reached 96," SONNA wrote on the X social network, adding that this figure was confirmed by Mahamuud Moallin, the head of Somalia's Disaster Management Agency.

Like the rest of the east and the Horn of Africa, Somalia has been hit by incessant rains since October. They were caused by El Niño and another Indian Ocean climate phenomenon.

Both of these climate phenomena affect ocean surface temperatures and cause above-average rainfall.

The floods have been described as the worst in decades and have displaced some 700,000 people, according to the United Nations.

Torrential rains have caused major flooding across the country, prompting the displacement of people and worsening a humanitarian crisis caused by ongoing insurgencies.

Meanwhile, in neighboring Kenya, 76 people died as a result of the floods, according to the Kenya Red Cross. The floods have displaced people, destroyed roads and bridges, and left many people without shelter, drinking water and food.
