An Israeli-owned ship is attacked with an Iranian drone

A fuel tanker owned by an Israeli billionaire was attacked by an Iranian drone in the Indian Ocean, a US defense official said on Saturday.

Friday's attack on the CMA CGM Symi ship comes as international freight lines have increasingly come under attack since the start of the Israel-Hamas war.

The US defense official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the disclosure. He said the Maltese-flagged ship was believed to have been attacked while in international waters by a triangular-shaped Shahed-136 drone carrying explosives. The drone exploded causing damage to the ship but not injuring the crew members.

"We continue to monitor the situation closely," said the American official. He did not explain what intelligence the US military had to conclude Iran was behind the attack, although US authorities believe the attack was carried out by Iran's Revolutionary Guards.

The same drones were used by Russia in the war in Ukraine.
