Two Americans exchanged with Taliban terrorist/The deal had been discussed for years

Two Americans arrested by Taliban authorities in Afghanistan have been exchanged for an Afghan imprisoned in the US on drug trafficking and terrorism charges.

The news came after Ryan Corbett and William Wallace McKenty were released. Afghan national Khan Mohmmad was serving a life sentence in a federal prison in California on drug trafficking and terrorism charges.

A statement from the Taliban government in Kabul announced the agreement, which was reached shortly before President Joe Biden finished his term in office.

The parties had been working on this agreement for two years. Discussions on other agreements are expected to continue as two more Americans are detained in Afghanistan, while the Taliban is demanding the release of another prisoner currently in the Guantanamo Bay prison camp. /CNA
