Earthquake in Taiwan, 27 injured and material damage

An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale was recorded in Taiwan this morning.

The quake struck at 12:17 a.m. local time, with its epicenter 12 kilometers north of Yujing at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to official sources. Taiwan's Central Meteorological Administration recorded a magnitude of 6.4.

Twenty-seven people were reportedly taken to hospital with minor injuries. Among them were six people, including a 1-month-old baby, who were rescued from a collapsed house in Tainan's Nanxi District. The Zhuwei Bridge on a provincial highway was reported to have been damaged.

No deaths have been reported, although rescue teams are still assessing the damage./ CNA
