Trump orders US to withdraw from World Health Organization

US President Donald Trump has ordered the US to withdraw from the World Health Organization, saying the global health agency had mishandled the COVID-19 pandemic and other international health crises.

Trump said the WHO had failed to act independently from undue political influence from WHO member states and demanded unfairly heavy payments from the US that are disproportionate to the amounts offered by other, larger countries, such as China.

"The WHO ruined us. It won't happen again," Trump said in signing an executive order for the withdrawal, shortly after his inauguration for a second term.

The move means the US will leave the UN health agency in 12 months and stop all financial contributions to its work. The United States is by far the WHO's largest financial supporter, contributing about 18% of its total funding. The WHO's most recent two-year budget, for 2024-2025, was $6.8 billion.

The US departure is likely to jeopardize programs across the organization, according to some experts inside and outside the WHO, particularly those that treat tuberculosis, the world's biggest infectious disease killer, as well as HIV/AIDS and other health emergencies./ CNA
