Venezuelan diaspora celebrates Maduro's ouster after US-led operation

Venezuelan migrants around the world erupted in celebration on Saturday after the ouster of President Nicolas Maduro in a US-led military operation. Maduro's rule is seen as the cause of one of the biggest migration crises in decades.

In the Chilean capital, Santiago, songs and cheers filled the streets as hundreds of Venezuelans gathered to celebrate the news of Maduro's capture. "We are free. We are all happy that the dictatorship has fallen and we have a free country," said Khaty Yanez, who has lived in Chile for seven years. Her compatriot, Jose Gregorio, said the moment represented the realization of a long-held hope: "After so many years of struggle, today is the day of freedom."

According to the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM), since 2014, some 7.7 million Venezuelans, roughly 20% of the population, have left the country due to poverty, lack of food and the search for a better life. Colombia has received the largest number of migrants, around 2.8 million, followed by Peru with 1.7 million, according to the regional platform R4V.

Published footage shows migrants waving the Venezuelan flag and reacting with strong emotions after US President Donald Trump's statement, which confirmed that the US has attacked Venezuela and captured President Maduro.

For years, the United States has been a major destination for Venezuelan migrants. However, during Trump's second term, many have faced harsher policies, forcing them to seek refuge in other countries in the region./CNA
