EU: Facebook and Instagram under investigation for handling disinformation

Meta's Facebook and Instagram are subject to an investigation into how the platforms handle disinformation under the Digital Services Act (DSA), amid fears they are vulnerable to Russian networks, the European Commission announced.

The alleged violations cover Meta's practices regarding misleading advertising and political content on its services, the Commission said, Euronews reports. 

According to the EU executive, the company's ad network is vulnerable to disinformation and potentially a target for Russian networks. 

The platforms also lack an effective real-time third-party election monitoring tool since Meta did not replace its public knowledge tool CrowdTangle, making it difficult for researchers and journalists to know what efforts the company is making to remove illegal content.

"Given the reach of Meta's platforms in the EU - accounting for over 250 million monthly active users - and in the run-up to the European elections and a series of other elections to be held in various member states, such a devaluation could result in damage to civil discourse and electoral processes in relation to disinformation tracking capabilities," said the Commission./ CNA
