The arrest of independent journalists in Russia has continued to increase, following the arrest of two more journalists at the weekend.

The Associated Press reported Sunday that Sergei Karelin was arrested by Russian authorities in the Murmansk region on charges of "extremism" in connection with videos he allegedly made for the Navalny Live YouTube channel.

Karelin, 41, is a journalist and cameraman and had worked for the Associated Press and Deutsche Welle as well.

He was arrested just a day after a Moscow court ordered the detention of journalist Konstantin Gabov on Saturday on the same charges.

Karelin and Gabov deny the charges. The "Navanly Live" channel was founded by the Anti-Corruption Foundation of the late Russian opposition leader, Alexei Navalny. Russia has intensified its suppression of independent media since it began its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022./ Rel
