Protests continue in the USA against the war in Gaza/ Hundreds of students

Hundreds more people were arrested on college campuses across the US on Saturday as student protests against the war on Gaza continued.

Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein was among those arrested by police. Protesters are demanding that institutions boycott companies and individuals with ties to Israel, the BBC reports.

But some Jewish students have complained of alleged anti-Semitism by some demonstrators. A spokesman for Ms. Stein said she was one of about 80 people who were arrested at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

The tents first appeared on the college green in Columbia on April 17. Protests then spread across the country as police in riot gear were sent to clear the tents, arresting more than 100 students. Soon after, students set up another protest camp at Yale University in Connecticut.

The protests were fueled by anger over Israel's offensive in Gaza, which has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry.
The Israeli military launched the offensive after about 1,200 Israelis and foreigners, mostly civilians, were killed and 253 others were taken hostage in Gaza when Hamas attacked Israeli communities near Gaza on October 7 last year./CNA
