France and Germany, agreement on "tanks of the future"

France and Germany have agreed to jointly produce the next generation of battle tanks, equipped with artificial intelligence and laser technology, tanks that are believed to change combat.

During a ceremony in Paris on April 26, the defense ministers of France and Germany, Sebastien Lecornu and Boris Pistorius, signed a memorandum of understanding, which provides for a 50-50 split in the production of advanced battle tanks called the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS). .

The project's push comes as Berlin and Paris want to show unity after a series of disagreements over how to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia.

In 2017, Germany and France agreed to develop a new generation of battle tanks as successors to the French Leclerc and German Leopard tanks, starting in 2040.

But the plans for the tanks faced delays and rivalry between French and German companies, as Berlin and Paris also had different priorities.

In March, the two ministers announced in Berlin that they had managed to unblock the stalled project, agreeing to share the work between the two countries.

"Today's signing is a great achievement," Pistorius told reporters.

"This is not about the tanks of the future, but about the future of tanks", added Lecornu.

This tank system will have the latest technology and could usher in a new era of ground combat.

MGCS tanks are not only armored cars, but a system of cars that can also be maneuvered by remote control. Also, the tanks will be equipped with drones, but they will also use artificial intelligence and laser technology.

With other countries wanting to have such technology and join such a project, Pistorius said the project would be open to partners, but that other countries would have to reach contractual agreements with French and German manufacturers./ REL
