Russian missiles hit power plants in central and western Ukraine

Russian missiles hit power generating facilities in central and western Ukraine on Saturday, further straining the damaged power grid. Ukraine, meanwhile, faces shortages in its air defense systems, shortfalls expected to be filled by new military aid recently approved by the United States.

The attack was carried out with ballistic missiles and self-guided missiles launched by strategic bombers launched from the Arctic Circle. This is the fourth massive Russian airstrike targeting Ukraine's energy supply system since March 22.

"The enemy again attacked Ukrainian energy facilities with massive bombing," announced DTEK, Ukraine's largest private energy company, adding that four of its six power plants had been damaged overnight.

Search and rescue teams tried to put out fires at several energy facilities in the western regions of Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk, near the border with NATO member states Poland and Romania.

Following attacks on energy facilities in the central Dnipropetrovsk region, drinking water supplies were also cut off in President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's hometown of Kryvyi Rih, officials said.

Ukrainian anti-aircraft systems shot down 21 of the 34 missiles, the Ukrainian air command announced in a statement. None of the objects hit were identified by name, a security measure intended to deny Russia the ability to assess the damage from the attacks.

Russia, which launched a frontal assault on Ukraine in February 2022, denies targeting civilians but says the Ukrainian energy system is a legitimate target. Ukrainian authorities said an energy worker was injured. Overnight, a hospital in the northeastern city of Kharkiv, which has been heavily bombed in recent weeks, was hit by a rocket. There were 60 patients in the hospital. The attack injured a woman, damaged the building, as well as the water and energy supply lines, the regional governor announced./ VOA
