China, US cooperate on 'bamboo bears'

China will send two adult pandas to the US state of California as part of a ten-year loan program as part of international cooperation in the conservation of "bamboo bears", the China Wildlife Conservation Association announced. 

Two bears, male Yunchuan and female Xinbao, will be transferred to the US by the Chinese Giant Panda Conservation and Research Center, which has partnered with the San Diego Zoo for more than 25 years. 

In November 2023, giant pandas Mei Xiang, Tian Tian and their cub Xiao Qi Ji returned from a zoo in China.

Mei Xiang and Tian Tian were loaned to the US 23 years ago and had four puppies, three of them - Tai Shan, Bao Bao and Bei Bei had previously returned to China.

The giant panda is considered an unofficial symbol of China and is under state protection. Sending these animals to different countries has already become a tradition, often called "panda diplomacy". /CNA
