More than 100 foreign nationals trying to enter the European Union by boat were rescued from the sea south of Crete in three separate incidents within a few hours, the Greek state news agency reported on Thursday.
In the first of three incidents, a Turkish-flagged cargo ship rescued 30 migrants from a small dinghy that was spotted 35 nautical miles south of the prefecture of Heraklion and took them to safety in the port of Kali Limenes.
Later, a German-flagged ship notified Greek authorities of another dinghy that was spotted 45 nautical miles south of Kali Limenes and proceeded to bring its 35 passengers to shore.
The third incident occurred in the same area, although closer to the coast of Crete, and involved 42 migrants who were brought ashore by the Coast Guard.
Crete has been experiencing a surge in migrant flows from the coast of North Africa in recent months. /CNA
