Russia attacks Ukrainian territory on the border with Poland/Polish fighter jets

Warsaw ordered the scramble of Polish and allied fighter jets and AWACS aircraft in the early hours of this morning, amid Russian missile and drone attacks on sectors of western Ukraine near the border with Poland, the Polish General Staff's operations command said.

"Pairs of rapid reaction fighter jets and a warning aircraft were hastily scrambled, and ground-based air defense and airspace surveillance systems were put on maximum alert ," the command explained via X.

Almost all of Ukraine was on alert due to a warning from the air force about Russian attacks with missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.

Poland announced yesterday that it would raise the threat level on several railway lines and use the army to protect critical infrastructure.

The statement came after incidents of sabotage of Russian origin, such as the explosion on the Warsaw-Lublin railway line, which connects the Polish capital to the Ukrainian border.

The worrying climate in Poland is reflected in the statement by the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, General Wislaw Kukula, where he said that Russia has begun preparations for war and that his country has entered a pre-war phase.

"The head of the Internal Security Service and the Minister of the Interior have asked me to introduce the third threat level, Charlie, due to terrorist threats. This level will apply to some railway lines, while the rest of the country will remain at the second alert level ," Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said in parliament yesterday.

Tusk told MEPs that two suspects in the latest sabotage on a Polish railway have been identified, adding that they are Ukrainians with long-standing ties to Russian intelligence services who have fled to Belarus.

The Kremlin accused Poland yesterday of succumbing to Russophobia after Warsaw blamed the explosion on a railway line to Ukraine on two suspects linked to Russian intelligence. /CNA
