Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister gets death sentence for crimes against humanity

Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to death after being found guilty of crimes against humanity for suppressing student-led protests that led to her ouster.

Sheikh Hasina was found guilty of authorizing the use of deadly force against protesters, 1,400 of whom died during last year's unrest.

Hasina, 78, was tried in absentia by the International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) in Bangladesh after protests forced her from power in July 2024. Prosecutors accused her of being behind hundreds of killings during the protests. Hasina has denied all charges, calling the trial politically motivated.
