Russia temporarily suspends oil exports from Novorossiysk after Ukrainian attack

A major oil terminal in the Russian port city of Novorossiysk in Krasnodar Krai temporarily suspended operations, accounting for approximately 2% of global exports, following the Ukrainian attacks.

Russia temporarily suspended roughly 2% of its global oil supply after a Ukrainian attack on one of its main facilities in the southwestern port city of Novorossiysk in Krasnodar Krai on Friday, according to multiple Russian officials and Telegram channels.

The attack, which hit the Sheskharis oil terminal and caused fires, officials said, serves as the terminal for the pipelines. It sparked a major fire in the country, which has now been extinguished, causing the suspension of exports of 2.2 million barrels per day, according to Reuters, citing industry sources.

Ukrainian attacks have repeatedly targeted Novorossiysk, as it acts as a key hub for Russia's Black Sea logistics and energy infrastructure.

Russian oil refineries and petrochemical plants are considered legitimate military targets by Kiev, as they help finance Russia's war in Ukraine.

The operational headquarters of Krasnodar Krai reported that the oil terminal had been hit, damaging several coastal facilities.

A civilian ship docked in the port was reported to have been hit in the massive attack, leaving three crew members injured, local media RIA Novosti said.

Andrii Kovalenko, head of the Ukrainian Center for Countering Disinformation, commented on the incident on social media. “This is the Novorossiysk oil terminal after the attack,” he wrote on Telegram. “Meanwhile, Russia is hitting residential buildings and energy infrastructure.”

Meanwhile, earlier in the week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on social media that "For the first time since the beginning of the war, this year a noticeable decline in oil production and refining has been recorded in Russia," adding, "The Russian budget's oil and gas revenues are decreasing and by the end of this year, Russia will have lost at least $37 billion in budget revenues from oil and gas."

The latest attack on Novorossiysk came as Russia launched waves of drones and missiles towards Kiev in a massive overnight attack that killed at least six people, injured 14 and set several residential buildings on fire./ CNA
