His friend involved in corruption scandal/ Zelensky announces reorganization of

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced today that the restructuring of state-owned energy companies is beginning, including the nuclear power company Energoatom, which has been at the center of a major corruption scandal in recent days.

"We are starting the restructuring of the main state-owned energy companies," Zelensky said in a statement on social media.

The statement also said a new supervisory board would be set up within a week at Energoatom, the state-owned nuclear power company at the center of the scandal.

On Monday, Ukraine’s Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) said it had uncovered a criminal system behind the embezzlement of $100 million intended for the sector, leading to the resignations of the justice and energy ministers.

In addition to Energoatom, other state-owned energy companies are also involved in the projects, such as the country’s hydroelectric power company and the national gas extraction and transmission companies.

Zelensky said that a full audit of the financial activities of these companies would be conducted, as well as a renewal of their leadership and state representatives on the boards of directors.

"Any fraud discovered in these companies must be subject to a swift and appropriate response ," he continued.

The latest corruption case uncovered by NABU has rocked the presidency, as the alleged mastermind of the scheme, Timur Mindich, was considered a close friend of President Zelensky.

In addition to the legal issues, Ukraine's energy sector has been hit in recent days by Russia's missile and drone campaign, which has plunged much of Ukraine into darkness. The latest massive bombing in the capital on Friday killed seven people and one injured person died in hospital today. /CNA
