Tensions ease/ Trump announces meeting with New York mayor at the White House

President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he plans to host New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani in the Oval Office on Friday. It would be the first face-to-face meeting between the two politicians since Mamdani was elected earlier this month.

"The Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran "Kwame" Mamdani, has requested a meeting. We have agreed to hold this meeting in the Oval Office on Friday, November 21st. Further details to follow!" Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

Dora Pekec, a spokeswoman for the mayor-elect, also confirmed the meeting in a statement.

"As is customary for a new mayoral administration, the mayor-elect plans to meet with the President in Washington to discuss the public safety, economic security, and affordability agenda that over a million New Yorkers voted for just two weeks ago ," the statement said.

A meeting between Trump and Mamdani would end months of hostility between the two, who have traded sharp criticism. Trump has repeatedly called Mamdani a “communist.” In the final stages of the mayoral race, Trump had endorsed former Democratic governor and independent candidate Andrew Cuomo.

"If Communist candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the New York City mayoral election, it is highly unlikely that I will contribute federal funds, beyond the minimum required, to my beloved first home, due to the fact that, as a Communist, this once great city has ZERO chance of success, or even survival!" Trump had said just two days before Election Day.

Mamdani spoke about the possibility of a meeting with Trump, where he also shared the issues they would discuss.

"I want to speak openly to the president about what it means to protect New Yorkers and how New Yorkers are trying to cope in this city, and frankly, the cost of living is something I've heard over and over again from New Yorkers about why they voted for Donald Trump ," the mayor said in an interview. /CNA
