Rama-Guilfoyle meeting and Greek-American investment in Albania

The US Ambassador to Athens, Kimberly Guilfoyle, held a meeting a few days ago with the Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, in Tirana, where the talks focused on US strategic interests in the region, including energy, regional cooperation and access to third forces.

Rama described the meeting as an opportunity to get to know each other and discuss important issues for regional security and development.

According to the Greek newspaper Kathimerini , the visit is also linked to a significant Greek-American investment in the mining sector in Albania. The framework agreement was signed between AKTOR and the BNI Foundation and aims at the exploration, development and exploitation of critical mineral resources, especially nickel and cobalt, with a particular focus on the Bilisht area.

The project envisages the creation of a joint venture company under Albanian law, where AKTOR Metal will own 51% and BNI Foundation 49%, bringing an investment that could reach 1 billion euros. The financing will be supported mainly by American capital, while the project will also benefit from technical advice from US-based companies, increasing the strategic importance of this investment for the Western supply chain.

The newspaper emphasizes that the announcement of the agreement coincides with the visit of the head of the AKTOR group, Alexandros Eksarchos, accompanied by Ambassador Guilfoyle, to Tirana, demonstrating the close connection between diplomacy and investment initiatives in the region./ CNA
