SPAK sends the acting Mayor of Tropoja Municipality to trial for corruption

The Special Prosecution Office against Corruption and Organized Crime completed the investigations and sent for trial to the Special Court of First Instance criminal proceeding No. 15 of 2025, against the defendants:

Rrok Gegaj – accused of committing the criminal offense “Active corruption of persons exercising public functions”, provided for in Article 244, paragraph two of the Criminal Code.
Zyra Islamaj – accused of committing the criminal offense “Passive corruption of persons exercising public functions”, provided for in Article 259, paragraph two of the Criminal Code.
From the entirety of the investigative actions carried out for this criminal proceeding, it results that citizen Zyra Islamaj, currently in the exercise of the duty of Mayor of Tropoja Municipality, has tried through an open tender, to favor the construction of a bridge for the benefit of her family members. She has intervened with the builder, Rrok Gega, to erect the bridge over the stream that passes near her sister's house. At the same time, she planned to engage the road maintenance technician, an employee of the Tropoja Municipality, to assist the builder. The builder, for his part, has also claimed that this construction was not part of the tender procedures and that he would give it as a gift to the Mayor of Tropoja.

The Special Prosecution Office has administered the incriminating material, based on information received on 8.1.2025, from the Democratic Party, based on the denunciation made by an investigative television show in November 2024. To be continued...
