Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe died on Friday after being shot twice.

The incident happened in the southern city of Nara. 

Abe, 67, was giving a campaign speech outside a train station for Kei Sato, a sitting member of the upper house of parliament.

Mr. Sato is running for the ruling party, the Liberal Democrats, in the Upper House elections scheduled for July 10.

Arma, e cila thuhet se ishte një armë e punuar "me dorë", u sekuestrua kur sulmuesi i dyshuar u arrestua. 

Ligjet e rrepta të armëve të zjarrit në Japoni e bëjnë blerjen e një arme jashtëzakonisht të vështirë.

I dyshuari është identifikuar si banor i Narës, Tetsuya Yamagami. 

Raportet e mediave lokale thonë se ai besohet të jetë një ish-anëtar i Forcës  Vetëmbrojtëse Detare të Japonisë, ekuivalenti i marinës japoneze.
