Albanian narcotics networks are increasingly involved in Italy in the trafficking and distribution of cocaine, unlike in previous years when they were active in the transportation of marijuana through maritime space with Albania and distribution in the Italian domestic market.

The latest Italian anti-drug report 2023, which refers to police data throughout 2022, claims that around 1,200 Albanians were denounced by the Italian anti-drug agency in 2022 for activity in the transportation and distribution of cocaine out of 1,127 who were denounced in 2021.

Meanwhile, in the transportation and distribution of cannabis in 2022, 239 Albanian shetas were denounced out of 300 that were denounced in 2021, with a decrease of 20.33%.

A significant decrease also occurred in the number of Albanian perpetrators denounced for the activity in the transportation and distribution of marijuana, where 62 perpetrators were denounced during 2022 out of 149 that were denounced in 2021.

The report evaluates the role of the Albanian and Italian police authorities in blocking the traffic of marijuana in the maritime space between the two countries.

The Italian anti-drug report estimates that the number of Albanians involved in the field of narcotics in 2022 and denounced to the Italian judicial bodies suffered a slight decrease with 1562 people compared to 2021 when 1599 people were denounced to the judicial authorities.

"Besides the "traditional" activism in the field of drug trafficking, the networks confirm their ability to develop complex schemes for money laundering and tax evasion, as well as the transfer of capital outside Italy, the report states.

According to the Italian anti-drug agency, Albanian networks, from a structural point of view, are often organized in small groups with a family base.

"Albanian criminal groups are characterized by the ability to maintain ties with the country of origin and by the ability to seek international projections in the trade of narcotic substances", the report assesses.

"In some cases, the report says, the operation of small, often multi-ethnic groups has been observed; on the other hand, an extraordinary ability to develop international drug trafficking at high levels, carried out by large criminal structures organized according to typical mafia schemes, with the availability of large financial resources, has been noticed.

According to the Italian anti-drug report "the geographical proximity between Italy and Albania has facilitated over time the development of direct relations between the Apulian and Albanian criminal groups, especially for the supply, storage and trading of narcotics.

The report mentions several major police operations carried out in various regions of Italy against drugs throughout 2022, where dozens of Albanian and Italian citizens ended up in handcuffs.

Pagesa e ngarkesave të drogës bëhej kryesisht me dërgimin fizk të parave drejt Shqipërisë, me anë të "shoferëve", që operonin në linjën e autobusit në seksionin Vlorë - Italia Veriore, thuhet në raport.

Raporti përmend gjithashtu një operacion të gjerë në Bolonja ku një organizatë italo-shqiptare ishte përfshirë në shitjen e kokainës, hashashit dhe marijuanës. “Në muajin korrik të vitin 2022 u dhanë 31 masa të paraburgimit ndaj të shtetasve shqiptarë dhe italianë përgjegjës për trafikun e drogës dhe tregtimin e drogës”, thuhet në raport lidhur me këtë rast./Zëri i Amerikës
