Flood situation/Vengu: Priority, return of residents to their homes

Minister of Defense, Pirro Vengu, spoke to the media after the conclusion of the Civil Emergencies meeting in Durrës.

Vengu said that there is still water presence in 5 areas, where groups of civilian and military forces have been established.

Vengu further said that there is water withdrawal in some areas.

The Minister also focused on the situation in Shkodra, where he said that the dangerous situation in Lower Shkodra continues.

Regarding the situation of the Vjosa River, Vengu said that quotas are reaching the maximum level.

" We have also created a group with water supply experts, opinions from other municipalities. We have also created a group of civil and military forces in the 5 areas where we still have water in homes. The priority is people, the priority is residential areas. The second element has to do with unblocking high water channels. There too, we have pumping systems and high-capacity pumps that help, both at the Courts of Appeal and in the Shkozet area, and they will continue uninterrupted throughout the evening hours, all night if necessary. The priority is the return of residents to their homes.

The balance has not worsened. We remain with those apartments that we have said are affected. There is a withdrawal of water in some areas, both in Ish-Kënetë and in Shkozet, but there is still a significant presence of water in the yards. I do not consider that there is a problem with the hydropower plant, it is a question that I am often asked. You can go and see for yourself, they are fully functional. We have even re-functionalized the old hydropower plant so that the rate of discharges is as high as possible. So, we have already ensured with the 5 teams that I mentioned a little earlier that we go house to house and that no corner of the Kënetë is left uncovered. We will be back in the field to personally verify that the entire team, whether from the local government or the Armed Forces and Civil Emergencies, goes where it is needed. I expect a dynamic situation. The focus at the national level has to do with the continuation of the management of the Drini cascade. We are not out of danger in Nënshkoder. In the Oboti area there are some water presences in agricultural areas, fortunately not in residential areas, and we are there with reinforced means. We also have a situation in the Vjosa basin; the quotas are reaching the maximum level. There too we have a presence near the embankments so that we can maximally limit the eventual consequences. We have significant flows coming into the Vjosa basin from Greece, as well as significant flows coming from Kosovo and from all the basins that practically flow into Fierza. So, the situation is very dynamic. We are particularly focused here regarding the Erzeni area, because there too the flows have been considerable. The whole land is practically like a sponge, and the more we evacuate, the more they are replaced. That is why it is a very dynamic night ", said Vengu.
