Together to protect against natural disasters

Natural disasters do not discriminate between states and nations. Therefore, to be protected, nations and states must come together to oppose the attacks of nature.

"Flood North ALB" is a training project, which is being developed in Albania, with the aim of creating a regional and European organization, to ensure a common response to natural disasters. Climate changes have made nature more aggressive and dealing with it even more difficult. Natural disasters, floods, fires, earthquakes, etc., are never limited within the territory of a region or country. And likewise the counter-responses should not be limited within just one state.

The "Flood North ALB" project is being organized with the participation of the countries of the Balkan region, as well as other countries of the Mediterranean and the EU. It is run by the Albanian National Civil Defense Agency (AKMC) and Shkodra has been chosen as the region where the operation will be organized.

The First Planning Conference, within the framework of this project, is being held in Shkodër, on May 30 and 31. He will work on improving human capacities, training and information with residents of areas affected by periodic floods, such as Shkodra. In the spring of next year, a flood demonstration and management operation to save people, property and livestock will be organized in this area.

The director of the AKMC, Mr. Haki Çako, assessed the project as a good opportunity to increase the capacities of the Albanian civil defense agency.

"This project will influence the rise of cooperation at the regional level to react together to natural phenomena. We are an integral part of the European Civil Protection Mechanism, and we have also contributed abroad. Last year we helped in Greece to neutralize several fires. But we still have a lot to do in increasing our capacities and in making a mechanism functional to make us react together to disasters, regardless of which country they happen in," said Çako.

The Prefect of the Shkodër district, Mrs. Majlinda Angoni, said that what happens between Albania and Montenegro, in cases of floods, is proof that nature does not divide nations or states when it strikes with its phenomena, so the union of forces and technical capacities, is the best solution to counter the growing aggressiveness of nature.
