The European Union opened this Tuesday the negotiations for membership in the European family, for Albania and North Macedonia.

But unlike European governments, EU citizens have expressed themselves against the expansion of the European Union.

Austrian citizens have come out openly against the enlargement. Even though Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer's government supports the integration of the Western Balkans into the European family, Austrian citizens do not seem to think so.

According to a recent poll by the Gesellschaft für Europapolitik (ÖGfE) in July, only 20 percent are in favor of North Macedonia's admission to the EU. In April it was still 26 percent.

Even in the case of Albania, approval for EU membership fell from 35 to 14 percent.

"A clear majority opposes the enlargement of the EU to include these countries, with which membership negotiations have started after long delays," writes Die Presse. /CNA.al
