The President of KiE announces his resignation/ The reason is revealed

Charles Michel has announced his resignation from the post of president of the European Council.

Michel has declared that he will leave as President of the Council of Europe in order to be a member of the European Parliament.

The mandate of the Belgian politician ends in November, while the European Parliament elections are scheduled for June.

The next president of the European Council must be chosen by a majority of the 27 EU leaders.

If a successor is not found in time, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban will temporarily hold the presidency. This has caused debate.

Michel has served as the head of the EU Council since the end of 2019. Before taking this role, he was the Belgian Prime Minister.

Michel said he will lead the list of the liberal Reformist Movement (MR) party in the European Parliament elections and will step down as president of the Council in July./ CNA
