The UN General Assembly has overwhelmingly voted a resolution ordering it to leave the occupied Palestinian territories within a year.

The non-binding vote follows a landmark ruling in July by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) requiring Israel to end "its illegal presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory as soon as possible and immediately halt all settlement activities there." ".

Wednesday's resolution was approved by 124 votes to 14 with 43 abstentions, followed by applause in the general assembly hall in New York. Albania abstained along with several other European countries, while Israel and the USA voted against the resolution. This is one of the rare cases where Albania votes differently from the US at the UN.

Resolutions against Israel by the general assembly are frequent, but this is the first since 1982 that openly spells out sanctions against Israel. The resolution states: "Israel's security concerns cannot override the principle of prohibiting the acquisition of territory by force."

It is also the first resolution tabled by Palestine since the UN General Assembly voted in May by 143 votes to 9 to upgrade Palestine's UN observer status by giving the Palestinian delegation the right to table resolutions .
