The recognition of pensions with Greece is not an issue left in the drawer. The governments of both countries have closed the first phase of talks in Athens and Tirana, showing their will to conclude the agreement soon.

The agreement on the recognition of pensions with Greece has progressed and both sides have agreed in principle.

In the month of April, the heads of social security of the two countries have closed the technical discussions in Tirana, to pave the way for the recognition of the years of work of Albanian immigrants in Greece, as one of the largest communities of the Albanian diaspora.

In September 2022, talks have also taken place in Athens, and if the agreement is reached quickly, Greece will become the 15th country to cover social security.

"The meeting in Tirana shows the positive will that the parties have to make it possible to reach a joint agreement as soon as possible, so much desired by our compatriots, but also Greek citizens who live and work in Albania", says the ISSH announcement. .

The draft law on pensions presented last March in the Greek Parliament foresees the reduction of 30 years of residence to benefit from the national pension from 40 years.

Albanian immigrants have been regular contributors to Greek social security schemes because insurance payments were necessarily linked to obtaining residence permits.

It is estimated that there are over 700,000 Albanians who worked in the neighboring country after the 90s. If the agreement goes through, they will be recognized for the years of social security contributions there, thus benefiting from the pension with the common formula.
