The back-to-school season is always an important time for parents and students.
It is a time that marks the beginning of a new chapter, filled with new expectations, goals and challenges. However, in recent years, this season has also become synonymous with high spending and rising prices.
The cost of school supplies, clothing, and technology equipment has created a financial burden for many families, making back to school not only an important event, but also an economic challenge.
One of their annual complaints is the high prices of school supplies, which parents are forced to buy and repurchase throughout the year as consumer goods. Businesses in the field state that their activity has been stabilized in recent years, arguing that there was an increase in demand after the pandemic.
In Tirana, but also in other cities, school supplies can be found in every office, bookstore, market, as well as children's stores. Kindergartens or schools have their own list of necessary products that children should be equipped with. In a field observation, a primary school child from grades 1-4, school supplies cost about 8,000 Lek. And this is just a starting point.
In shopping centers, a special corner is created for the return to school and "Back to School" campaigns start in the first days of September. The cake of expenses for this day, which starts for children in preschool and kindergarten, is shared not only in the small shops of the chancellery, but also in a "titan battle" between shopping centers.
Small neighborhood stores say that sales have dropped significantly, while shopping centers report that this year has been good, in terms of sales of school items. Most parents choose to go to large shopping centers where the range of products is wider.
Sources close to "NoLimits" at Casa Italia, a business which has over 15 years in the Albanian market, tell "Monitor" that there has been high interest in school bags and filled wallets. According to them, they have chosen bags with high prices, over 6000 ALL, as an indicator that they want to use them for more than one school year.
Operators at the "Infiniti Office" office in New Tirana say that sales have been at good levels this year. "We noticed an increase in demand for school supplies such as pencils, pens, colors, notebooks. We have several points in Tirana and this year, you can feel the difference from other years, especially 2021, 2022 which was very low. For the last two years, we have focused on improving the range of products they offer, bringing better quality tools", they claim.
If we make a total collection of all prices for school items, it turns out that parents have to spend an average of 12,000 lek to send a child to school, without books and assuming that the products were bought relatively cheap and not in better quality stores.
