Former DP MP passes away

Tomor Dosti, former MP and former vice-chairman of the Democratic Party of Albania, one of the well-known figures of the Albanian right in the early years of pluralism, has passed away at the age of 96.

Tomor Dosti was born in Gjirokastra in 1930. His life was marked early by political persecution. After the escape of his father and brother, his family faced the repression of the communist regime.

In 1953 he was arrested and initially sentenced to 20 years in prison for "attempted escape", a sentence that was later increased to 25 years in prison. He served his sentence in Burrel prison, among many well-known personalities of Albania at the time. After his release from prison, his family spent years in exile.

With the fall of the communist regime in 1991, Dosti joined the Democratic Party of Albania, contributing to building its right-wing profile in the south of the country. Together with Pjetër Arbnori, Leka Tota, Uran Butka and Ajet Rusi, he helped consolidate the anti-communist spirit and national morality in the new party.

In the early years of pluralism, he was vice president of the Democratic Party and was elected as a member of parliament in two consecutive legislatures, from 1991 to 1996. In 1998, he retired from active politics.

Tomor Dosti will be remembered as a figure who experienced the persecution of the communist regime and then became involved in the political life of the country during the period of democratic transition.

Democratic Party MP Belind Këlliçi also reacted to the bitter news, emphasizing that Dosti made valuable contributions to the political scene.

"The passing of Tomor Dosti is bitter news for his relatives, family members, all those who knew him, and especially for the Democrats.

Twice MP and vice president of the Democratic Party for a period, Dosti brought valuable contributions to the political scene.

Moreover, he himself was witness to the crimes and persecution that the communist regime inflicted on the country's elites and large families.

Dosti was convicted and served time in prison in Burrel, followed by a long exile with his relatives.

With the advent of freedom, he took his rightful place by becoming active for the values ??and principles that Albanians sought and aspired to.

"May he rest in peace, may his memory be eternal," Këlliçi wrote./ CNA
