The passing of Archbishop Anastasios and the enthronement of His Beatitude,

The Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania for the year 2025 had several changes in its leadership.

On January 25, 2025, the Archbishop of Tirana, Durrës and all Albania, Anastas Janullatos, passed away at the age of 95.

His Beatitude, Anastasios Janullatos, led the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania for 33 years, starting in June 1992.

After the passing of His Beatitude, Janullatos, Archbishop of Tirana, Durrës and all Albania, Joan Pelushi was elected.

His Beatitude, Joan Pelushi, was elected Archbishop of Tirana, Durrës and all Albania on March 16, 2025 by the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of Albania, with unanimous votes.

Previously, His Beatitude Joan Pelushi was the Metropolitan of Korça, where he was enthroned since July 20, 1998.

Following the appointment of His Beatitude, John as Archbishop, His Grace Anastas Mamaj was elected Metropolitan of Korça.

On September 16, 2025, the Graceful Synod of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania, under the leadership of His Beatitude Joan, elected His Grace Anastasius, Metropolitan of Korça.

On June 28, 2025, the Metropolitan of Gjirokastra, His Grace Dhimitri, passed away. His Grace Dhimitri served as Metropolitan of Gjirokastra since November 11, 2006, when he was elected by the Holy Synod of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania.

After the passing of His Grace Dhimiti, His Grace Nathanael was elected Metropolitan of Gjirokastra.

His Grace Nathanael was unanimously elected Metropolitan of Gjirokastra by the Holy Synod of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania, under the presidency of His Beatitude Archbishop Joan, on September 16, 2025. Until his election, His Grace had been serving as the Titular Metropolitan of Amantia since 2016.

After the election of His Grace Nathanael as Metropolitan of Gjirokastra, the Metropolis of Amantia was led by Archimandrite Ignati.

Changes were also made in the composition of the Holy Synod, following the passing of His Grace Demetrius and the election of His Beatitude, John as Archbishop of Tirana, Durrës and all of Albania.
