Mirel Çokja was found dead in an abyss/ Family files complaint with AMP

The Çokaj family has filed a report with the Police Supervision Agency against 4 Malësi e Madhe police officers regarding Mirel Çokaj, who was found dead in a ravine in the mountain village of Kozhnje.

The family strongly suspects that Mirel Çokaj was killed by his associates with whom he had a drug parcel that the police later destroyed. The incident occurred on September 18, while the body was pulled from the abyss the next day by the Army Forces who arrived by helicopter.

The four officers have been denounced by the Çokaj family because, according to them, they did not carry out investigative procedures and they suspect that they abused their duty by not acting properly in collecting evidence and investigating this serious incident.

The Malësia e Madhe Police and then the local directorate of Shkodra initially reported it as an accidental event, but the family initially suspected that Mirel Çokaj had been killed and had not slipped on the mountain as initially claimed.

Meanwhile, the Shkodra prosecution has launched investigations into this event for the criminal offense of "causing suicide", continuing to investigate the case that the police referred to as accidental.

The prosecution has raised its suspicions after the family members' denunciation and is questioning all parties and collecting all possible evidence to establish whether or not this is a murder.

The victim's mother and sister, along with a cousin in the US, a former police officer, have publicly stated that they are convinced that Mirel Çokaj was murdered by his associates in the drug plot and are urgently demanding that this matter be fully clarified and, according to them, that justice be served and the perpetrators be punished.

The family members claim that they killed him to avoid giving him his share, given that the narcotic plants were on the verge of being harvested and almost ready to be sold.

In addition to filing a complaint with the prosecutor's office, the Çokaj family has now taken another step by filing a complaint with the AMP against 4 Malësia e Madhe police officers, two crime officers and two other service personnel from the police station there. The complaint was sent by mail from the family to the AMP.

AMP will review this case to see if there were any violations of investigative procedures or abuse and misuse of duty by the 4 officers./ CNA
