Greek Minister of State Stavros Papastavrou has arrived in Albania today where he is expected to meet the mayor of Himara Fredi Beleri.

The Greek media reports that the meeting has been planned since Beleri has been in prison for several months, although democratically elected.

The Greek minister's visit comes at a time when he is being tried on charges of "buying votes".

Fredi Beleri was arrested by the police just 2 days before the May 15 elections because he was suspected of buying votes.

Although under arrest, Beleri secured the votes to be elected as the head of the municipality of Himara. The Beleri issue has also fueled diplomatic debates between the two countries, where Greece recently blocked Albania's EU membership process by not signing the joint declaration with the EU countries.

Greek media write that Papastavrou is expected to express the support and solidarity of the Greek government in the difficult battle for Beleri./ CNA
