The fight against crime and corruption/ Dumani, meeting with the chief

The head of SPAK, Altin Dumani, was yesterday in Budva, where he met with his counterparts from the region, but also with the highest officials of Eurojust.

All the prosecutors, who have undertaken the fight against organized crime and corruption, also encouraged by a concrete project such as the Western Balkan Criminal Justice, agreed that they must be faster than crime to solve the cases under consideration.

So for them, crime has no borders, no countries, no gender, no religion. Therefore, the prosecutor's offices, in the exchange of information, must be faster and more efficient.

The High State Prosecutor's Office, in cooperation with the Western Balkan Criminal Justice project (WBCJ), on the initiative of the senior state prosecutor Milorad Markovic, organized in Budva the first Regional Consultative Forum of High and Special Prosecutors of the region on the topic of improving cross-border cooperation in criminal justice in the Western Balkans.

The two-day Consultative Forum was organized with the aim of direct exchange of information relevant to overcoming challenges in practice in matters of organized crime and high corruption. This meeting gathered 30 participants from the countries of the Western Balkans and the European Agency for Judicial Cooperation in Criminal Matters (EUROJUST) from The Hague.

Senior State Prosecutor Milorad Markovic assessed that the judicial institutions of the Western Balkan states have an important task ahead - to put an end to all forms of organized, cross-border crime and corruption with efficient cooperation based on trust.

"We will achieve those goals faster and easier by improving the cooperation between us and with international partners, such as EUROJUST. This cooperation should be direct, fast and simple, without often lengthy bureaucratic procedures. We are aware that those we fight against, the perpetrators of criminal offenses, do not recognize these procedures, for them there are no borders, national and religious differences. They join very easily and quickly to achieve profit. This very fact imposes on all of us, the prosecution offices of all states of the region, to be more efficient and dependent on each other, to strengthen mutual trust, to show institutional strength and determination to achieve concrete results in the fight against crime organized and corruption," - assessed the senior state prosecutor.

The President of EUROJUST, Ladislav Hamran, emphasized that the partners in the Western Balkans are of key importance for EUROJUST.

"The potential of our cooperation is also confirmed by the ever-increasing number of cases, which in 2023 reached 708 investigations in which prosecutors and judges from all over the Western Balkans participated. With the support of the European Union Criminal Justice Project in the Western Balkans, I look forward to the further integration of our partners into the EU security chain,” said Hamran.

Within the Consultative Forum, the senior state prosecutor Milorad Markovic held bilateral meetings with the senior and special prosecutors of the states of the region. The topic of the meetings, which was attended by the deputy high state prosecutor and the prosecutor in relation to EUROJUST, Jelena ?aleti?, was the improvement of regional cooperation with the aim of a more efficient fight against organized crime and corruption.

The Consultative Forum was also attended by representatives of the diplomatic corps, prosecutors in connection with EUROJUST, as well as the team of the Western Balkan Criminal Justice project.
