Lake Prespa, in danger/ The water level has dropped by 8 meters
Lake Prespa

Lake Prespa, which stretches across 3 countries, Albania, North Macedonia and Greece, one of the oldest in Europe is in danger.

Every year, the waters of the lake shrink further due to evaporation, lack of rain and excessive use for irrigation, writes the prestigious media " Euronews ".

With an area of ??about 260 square kilometers, more than twice the size of Paris, the ancient lake is home to more than 2,000 species of fish, birds, mammals and plants. It is most famous for its population of the Dalmatian Pelican, a globally threatened species.

Nine of its 11 native fish species are found nowhere else in the world.

All this is at risk, as the water level continues to decrease. It is now 8 meters lower than in the late 1970s.

The action to save Lake Prespa has stalled. Hopes rose in 2000, when the 3 Balkan countries put aside their political differences, joining together to protect the delicate ecosystem they share.

A political agreement was signed and the Transfrontier National Park of Prespa was established. But since then, little progress has been made on the project./ CNA
