Declaration/ The rights of Albanian convicts in Greece are violated, they go on

The Albanian convicts in the neighboring country of Greece announced through a statement that they went on a hunger strike after their rights were violated in terms of parole.

They ask the justice institutions in Greece to take measures for their demands.

Convicts of other nationalities and not only Albanians are part of the hunger strike in the prisons of Greece.

Full statement:

We are incarcerated in various prisons around the country and as human beings we have specific rights, which are defined in the Constitution, in the European Convention on Human Rights and in various conventions that bind our country.

Recently, the curtailment of our long-suffering rights is unprecedented. However, given the various government announcements, we want to point out the grim reality that prevails in Greek prisons as well as highlight its weak points

The Criminal Code, which affects our lives.

First, the various regulations limiting the rights of prisoners must distinguish between criminal and political prisoners.

Second, the legislation cannot be opportunistic, and every time the mass media shows news of a serious murder, all the penal regulations are successively changed to the detriment of all prisoners.

Third, the licensing and parole process must be governed by the legal framework in force at the time of the crime. Any other interpretation and retroactive abridgment of prisoners' rights by subsequent opportunistic legislation violates the right to apply the milder law, as this includes the imposition of sentence, the right to a fair trial, and the constitutionally guaranteed dignity of the prisoner. prisoners.

The fundamental limitation and "cutting" of the possibility of obtaining regular permits, even educational permits, brutally violates both the right of prisoners to reintegrate into the Greek state, as well as the protection of society from prisoners who will be uprooted from it.

The new Penal Code creates the paradox of creating the right to get permission only a short time before the right to parole is established. This brings great difficulties in our reintegration and resocialization and creates great problems with prisoners, who in the previous regime has already been granted a license and they have already begun to reintegrate without problems, so in this way they effectively leave society again.

In addition, parole is the right of prisoners, but the unjustified delay of the Court of First Instance, the harsh and strict conditions already imposed by the Criminal Code and then the unjustified dismissal of the relevant requests make the situation in prison even more. difficult, with As a result, we have to sign the aforementioned request three, four and five times for our summary dismissal and all that happens in practice is that the Councils.

Dragging and rejecting our intimate applications all the time.

Since our previous protests were not answered, from today 19.7.2024 we will go on hunger strike to demand the understandable

We seek to resolve our issues peacefully and through dialogue, your brief response will help us move in that direction.
