Journalist Klodiana Lala spoke today regarding the mandate of the prosecutors of the Special Prosecution Office.

Lala said that SPAK prosecutors should have lifelong status to guarantee independence.

According to the journalist, there have been cases where prosecutors have removed children from Albania due to the risk of organized crime.

"The mandate is 9 years, the discussion is will it cease to function after 9 years? I am of the opinion that given the history of developed countries, the US has it with eternal status, and so does Britain. Only by guaranteeing independence can the prosecutor and judge dare to touch the untouchables. If the history of mandates remains limited and the discussion can be, somewhere between the lines the Minister of Justice said that the functioning of SPAK is only 9 years and it seemed as if he linked the mandate of the prosecutors to the end and duration of the end of SPAK.

I think that SPAK prosecutors should definitely have a permanent status with some evaluations and criteria. The prosecutor should have a permanent status. A prosecutor who goes to SPAK has met some criteria, now to investigate organized crime, it is an art in itself, not all prosecutors can have the capacity and adapt to investigate organized crime. Are there among them those who should not be there? Yes, but there are mechanisms for this.

"We have prosecutors in SPAK who have removed their children from the University, one of the children of a prosecutor was in Germany, he was protected by the German authorities, due to the danger he faced from organized crime. In the end, he returned to Albania, his work was interrupted in some way. That's why you have to guarantee his independence. In SPAK, you are a protected prosecutor," said Lala./CNA
