"Devote energy to solving press freedom problems"/ Reporters Without

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has responded to Prime Minister Edi Rama's statements through a reaction on social media.

The post states that instead of trying to prove that the Reporters Without Borders index is wrong, Rama should work to solve the problems of press freedom in Albania.

Among other things, they are said to be ready for a dialogue on their proposals to strengthen the safety of journalists, protect the independence of the media, and ensure their sustainability in Albania.

"Prime Minister Edi Rama, instead of trying in vain to prove that #RSFIndex is wrong, we propose that you devote this energy to solving the endemic problems of press freedom in Albania. With its local partners, RSF is ready for a dialogue on its proposals ," the Reporters Without Borders post reads.

Two days ago, the head of government made a reaction to Reporters Without Borders, regarding the issue of media freedom in Albania. Rama shared a report on a monitoring period of 120 days, covering 106,962 articles in 47 monitored media outlets, the prime minister says that this weakens the thesis of a “captured” media environment.

He stated that in this analysis, the opposition's share of the vote reaches 68.2%, while the government's visibility stands at 31.8%. The head of government writes that criticism of the government exceeds positive coverage by almost five times.

We recall that according to the World Press Freedom Index of Reporters Without Borders, Albania has marked a decline in the ranking of countries for media freedom. Our country was ranked 83rd out of 180 countries in total, while last year it was in 80th place.

According to the Reporters Without Borders report, in Albania, press freedom and media independence are threatened by conflicts of interest between the business and political worlds, a weak legal framework and party regulation. It further adds that journalists are victims of acts of intimidation by politicians and organized crime. /CNA
