The arrested mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, with 13 charges for 5 serious criminal offenses, has appealed to the High Court, where he has requested the replacement of the security measure "Arrest in prison" with a milder security measure such as "Property guarantee" or "Obligation to report to the judicial police."

The Supreme Court will today review the appeal filed by the arrested mayor Erion Veliaj.

This move comes at a time when his stance on litigation is displaying a stark contrast and a strategy that looks like procedural play.

Veliaj has chosen not to appear in the sessions of the Special Court, where the criminal process against him is taking place, as a coward who is afraid to face justice, the facts and evidence found by prosecutors who have caught him in corruption, abuse of office, laundering the proceeds of crime, hiding property and bringing prohibited items into the cell, but he personally participates in the trials that he uses as an attack on justice and prosecutors.

On the one hand, he seeks the easing of restrictive measures in the Supreme Court, but on the other hand, he avoids a direct confrontation in the GJKKO with the voluminous facts and evidence that have been sent to the court.

We recall that Erion Veliaj has been left in prison by all levels of courts in the country.

Even the Supreme Court in July of last year left the mayor in prison, for the 13 criminal charges against him.
