The World Council of Churches (WCC) expresses its condolences on the passing of His Beatitude Archbishop Anastasius.

Through a response highlighting the full contribution of Archbishop Anastasios, the World Council of Churches calls him an influential catalyst in the Orthodox world and a giant in the ecumenical sphere.

An honorary member of the Academy of Athens and former president of the World Council of Churches (WCC), with more than six decades in the ecumenical movement, Anastasius was known as a messenger of peace and wisdom throughout the world and a champion of interfaith dialogue.

“Today we remember and honor not only the intellectual and institutional achievements and ecumenical commitment of Archbishop Anastasios, but also his renewal and dialogue, even and especially in difficult times and places. He leaves our global society an inspiring and enviable legacy as a true Christian witness to peace, justice and reconciliation.”

Anastasius' career in ministry spanned more than 60 years, from early ministry in Greece and Africa to leading the Orthodox Church in Albania./ CNA
