EC: Women in the EU are still paid 13% less than men

Women in the European Union (EU) are paid on average 13 percent less than men doing the same job, the European Commission (EC) said on Tuesday.

This is happening because the EU already has a law for equal pay.

"Equal pay for equal work, or work of equal value, is one of the essential principles of the EU. It was established in the Treaty of Rome in 1957," the Commission said in a statement.

The EC added that, however, progress in closing the gender pay gap has stalled and been slow in recent years.

To help address this problem, the European Commission has established a Payment Transparency Directive, which came into effect at the beginning of June.

The directive, an EU law, sets the framework for how to apply the idea of ??"work of equal value" and comparative criteria which include skills, effort, responsibilities and working conditions.

The directive aims to help workers spot and challenge pay discrimination.

However, this directive has not yet become law in the 27 EU countries, which have three years to do so./ REL
