Israel demands resignation of UN chief over comments on Hamas attack

Israel has reacted angrily to comments made by the UN secretary general about the war in Gaza at the Security Council.

Antonio Guterres said on Tuesday that he unequivocally condemned Hamas' deadly attacks on Israel two weeks ago, but that it was important to recognize that they "did not happen in a vacuum".

Israeli Ambassador Gilad Erdan accused him of "justifying terrorism" and demanded his immediate resignation.

On Wednesday, Guterres rejected "misinterpretations" of his statement.

"I am shocked by the misinterpretations of some of my statements yesterday in the Security Council as if I were justifying acts of terror by Hamas. This is false. It was the opposite," he said. 

On October 7, approximately 1,500 Hamas gunmen infiltrated southern Israel from Gaza. They killed at least 1,400 people, most of them civilians, and took another 222 people hostage.

Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry says more than 6,500 people have been killed in the territory since Israel retaliated with airstrikes and artillery as it massed troops for an expected ground invasion./ CNA
