IGJEUM: Intense rainfall expected, risk of flooding

The intense rainfall expected this afternoon (Friday, January 2) and tomorrow (Saturday, January 3) may bring increased risk of flooding, especially in the north and center of the country, warns the Institute of Geosciences.

According to forecasts, some regions are at risk of flash floods of small mountain rivers, as well as landslides. In urban areas of these regions, localized flooding may occur, depending on the condition of the sewage system.

Meanwhile, IGJEUM warns that the rainfall will bring dangerous increases in flows and levels in the Drin-Buna, Lake Skadar, Mat, Shkumbin and Vjosa rivers, and as a result, flooding.

Precipitation: 

This afternoon and tomorrow, intense to locally very intense rainfall is expected in the Shkodër and Kukës regions, while in the Lezhë, Dibër, Durrës, Tirana and Elbasan regions, moderate to locally intense rainfall is expected, accompanied by thunderstorms. In the other regions, light to locally moderate rainfall is expected. Snowfall is expected in the Alps today.

Temperature: 

Tomorrow, minimum and maximum air temperatures are expected to reach:

on the coast: 10 / 16 °C
in the lowlands: 7 / 15 °C
in the mountains: 3 / 11 °C

Wind: 

This afternoon and tomorrow, the wind is expected to blow moderately to strongly on the coast. /CNA
